Yesterday, I attended an interesting discussion on the first Australian shot in World War I. It was a most informative lecture on a confrontation in New Guinea where an Australian contingent went to New Guinea to destroy a wireless tower which provided the occupying German folk  with excellent contacts with their ships around the Pacific. We were presented with names and details of ships and submarines - where they came from and where they ended up.We heard the names of the various commanders of the ships. We didn't (and wouldn't have expected to) hear that John Jones or Tom Pryor or Jim Bennett left his wife or was shot in the leg or was only 18 years old. Maybe that's our problem. Wars are reported in terms of loss of land, loss of ships, use of war materials BUT NEVER in terms of loss of life or injuries. How many Afghanis have been killed by Australian and US forces, how many of our soldiers are now suffering PTSD or what has happened to wives and children on the continuing absence of fathers and sons.Maybe........
